A dreamcatcher was orginally hung from a hoop on a baby's cradle board with the idea that it would catch and hold everything evil in the same way a spider web catches things.  According to traditional beliefs, the good deams and thoughts were allowed to filter through the hole in the center, and the bad dreams that were caught in the "web" would perish with the first light of day.
